Get the most out of your run! Here are some tips to take it to the next level.

Running is one of the most accessible hobbies that offer many benefits. When you run, your body will increase in strength, cardiac endurance and increase your mental health. Here are a few tips to keep in mind when pushing yourself to a new best!

Stretch

One of the first things you should do before you run is to stretch your muscles and prepare them for the workout ahead. When your muscles are properly warmed up, you will reduce your chances of injury. Unstretched, tight muscles are more susceptible to tears, strains and pulled muscles, which could inhibit your running for a while.

Rest

Adequate sleep is one of the most important tools any athlete can use. Sleep allows your body to fully relax the muscles, increasing blood flow and recovery.

Breathing

Running requires focused breathing to keep you going. Taking in measured rhythmic breaths allows oxygen to flow through your body more easily, reducing fatigue.

An example of rhythmic breathing may involve inhaling for three steps, exhaling for two through your mouth. Breathing through your mouth allows for more oxygen to reach your lungs, nose breathing can cause your nostrils and other facial muscles to tighten.

Gear

Choosing a good pair of running shoes is essential at any level. Your shoes should fit the shape of your foot properly and provide arch support and cushion to prevent injury. Ill-fitting shoes can cause pain in your feet, legs, and back.

Mind over matter

Sometimes it's not the socks, shoes or weather that prevent us from achieving our goals. Having a great mindset to get out of the house is important. Check out a new playlist or go out with a friend if you are stuck in a rut. Enhance your run with personal mantras, motivational materials, and energy-boosting music.

Making minor adjustments with each run can improve your running and help you reach your goals. Change your routine slowly buy stretching a little more, breathing a little better and even purchasing those new shoes you have been thinking about!
